NOT AN ASTRONAUT; NO AFFILIATION WITH NASA. I was dressed up for Halloween. Presented on October 31st, 2016 at Stack Overflow’s Remote Meetup in Philadelphia. #PhillyCheeseStack
If you want to try landing the shuttle for yourself for fun, try F-Sim www.f-sim.com/ (I have no affiliation… just a fan).
Sorry about the autofocus (we disabled it in later talks). Me running around on stage didn't help. As always, send complaints to Steve.
If you're interested in more details on reentry and landing, I also wrote an answer on Stack Exchange Aviation: aviation.stackexchange.com/questions/21981/how-does-the-space-shuttle-slow-down-on-the-re-entry-descent-and-landing/23889#23889
— This was one of nine «Tiny Talks» given over three days at the meetup. Every year, employees submit Tiny Talk ideas on a wide range of topics (some completely random and not company-related at all, like this one) and we vote on which ones we want to hear. So, thank you to my coworkers for voting me in.
Original proposal description I submitted for this talk:
Let's say you're traveling at about 17,500 miles per hour (28,000 km/h) in low earth orbit, your main engines are out of fuel, and it's your job to guide the spaceship through a fiery re-entry without burning up or skipping out of the atmosphere, navigate to your landing site, and arrive with just enough energy to make an unpowered landing on a runway which is halfway around the planet from where you started. And, of course, either you succeed on your first try, or everyone dies. So, no pressure…. In this talk, I'll show you how space shuttle designers, pilots, and autopilots managed to do just that.
— All real-life photos and videos (except the last slide) were produced by NASA. Everything that looks hand-drawn was done by me on a Wacom Intuos Pro tablet in ArtRage. Animations were done in After Effects. Between the concept, outline, script, artwork, animations, rehearsals, and editing, I spent somewhere around 200 hours over two months working on it. Very little time was spent researching. In case it wasn't obvious, I've been more than a little obsessed with the topic for years now.

Space shuttle Atlantis was moved Thursday, Sept. 4, from the Vehicle Assembly Building to Launch Pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, Fla., for its upcoming mission to service the Hubble Space Telescope. The move is referred to as «rollout.» Now that the shuttle is in launch position, Atlantis' crew will arrive at Kennedy on Sept. 21 to participate in a full launch dress rehearsal, known as the terminal countdown demonstration test, scheduled for Sept. 22-24. Atlantis is targeted to launch Oct. 10. During the 11-day STS-125 mission, the shuttle's seven astronauts will install two new instruments in Hubble, as well as replace the Fine Guidance Sensor. Atlantis' crew members are Commander Scott Altman, Pilot Gregory C. Johnson and Mission Specialists John Grunsfeld, Mike Massimino, Megan McArthur, Andrew Feustel and Michael Good.

Emergency Egress Slidewire Baskets Released for the Final Time
At Launch Pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the seven slidewire baskets travel down to the ground for the final time after being released by technicians from the 195-foot level. The system of seven slidewire baskets at launch pads A and B provided an escape route for astronauts and personnel inside the orbiter or on the orbiter access arm. The baskets are suspended from slidewires that extend from the pad's Fixed Service Structure to a landing zone 1,200 feet to the west. Each basket could hold up to three people. A braking system catch net and drag chain slowed and then halted the baskets sliding down the wire at approximately 55 miles per hour in about half a minute.

— Conversor de energia das ondas: dispositivo para transformar a energia mecânica das ondas do oceano em energia mecânica (fluxo de uma substância) ou energia elétrica;
— Coluna de Água Oscilante: uma câmara de fundo aberto cheia de ar e água, cuja ação das ondas move a coluna de água para cima e para baixo como um pistão, forçando o ar a passar por uma turbina;
— Atenuador: estrutura flutuante orientada paralelamente ao curso das ondas, onde diferentes alturas de ondas ao longo do comprimento do dispositivo flexionam as conexões que acionam as bombas hidráulicas que podem ser conectadas às turbinas;
— Corpo oscilante: bóia flutuante que oscila com ondas, gerando eletricidade dentro da bóia ou puxando um gerador ou bombeando água através de uma turbina (Movimento Harmônico Simples);
— Dispositivos de Galgamento: eservatório preenchido por ondas a uma altura mais alta do oceano médio nas proximidades, no qual a água do reservatório é liberada, girando uma turbina;
— Bioincrustação: acúmulo de micro-organismos, plantas, algas e/ou animais sobre as estruturas molhadas;
— Onda oceânica de superfície: energia que passa pela água e faz com que ela se mova em movimentos circulares;
— Turbina: máquina para produzir energia contínua na qual uma roda com pás é atingida por um fluxo rápido de água, vapor, gás, ar ou outro fluido e giros (geralmente conectados a um ímã que gira);
