Technology has really come a long way! And a great way to see that is through the creation of robots. We all played with remote controlled cars at some point and a lot of us today have drones — these pretty much represent the basic concept of robotics: they are machines that perform tasks as they follow our instructions. But what we see in stores doesn’t compare to what is happening inside the labs around the world. Everyday, groups of engineers come together trying to find ways to further develop robotic projects, which a lot of them are inspired by things in nature. Today I’ll be showing you 10 Amazing Robotic Animals — some of them can be easily mistaken for a real animal! Stay tuned all the way to number one and see how far technology has come!
Smartbird
The Smartbird is an ornithopter, which is pretty much an aircraft with flapping wings. It was designed by Festo’s Bionic Learning Network. The Smartbird can take off, fly and land by itself, which makes it a very autonomous robot. It’s one of the robots that best imitates the flight of real birds. Its wings in fact, not only flap but can even twist. An electrical motor in its body, allows its wings to move in a vertical way. When you look at it, the Smartbird can fly almost as perfectly as as an actual bird. From far, you might even think it’s a real one! The Smartbird is a robot that can help researchers understand the birds' flight better, and even improve the way in which airplanes are designed. It can also help in the further development of drone technology and other flying robots in the future.
The Bionic Ant
The Smartbird is not the only robot that Festo has created. They’re actually one of the leading companies in the development of robotic animals. Next on this list, I have another one of Festo’s creations: a swarm of bionic ants. These ants, that are 13 centimeters long, have been designed like real ants, not only on the outside, but also in their behavioral patterns. These ants can communicate with each other to carry on tasks as a community. They come with a small camera within the eyes region and some monitors which allow them to move and perform. They have two batteries that allow them to function wirelessly for up to 40 minutes. If the battery runs out, they can step to the dock and recharge through their antennas.
The Bionicopter
And once again...another creation by Festo! I really want to introduce you to other companies, but the team at Festo is really good at making robotic animals! The bionicopter is one of the most efficient flying robots due to the fact that it is more maneuverable than the others. It’s also known as “The Dragonfly Robot” — although with a body of 19 inches long, it’s quite larger than the real insect! However, this robot moves its wings just like the creature that inspired it. This robot can fly to the front, to the back and make an abrupt stop in mid air. The bionicopter is a great example of what wireless communication can become. This robot can follow commands in real time thanks to its sensors that allow it to assess its surroundings at the same time it receives instructions. This robot is not only smart and efficient, but it’s also very good looking — Its body is covered in blue polyester, which makes it a very beautiful and elegant robot.
The Bionic Kangaroo
When you think of kangaroos, the first thing that might come to your mind is...Australia! But also the way they jump from place to place. With the bionic kangaroo, the creators have implemented a mechanism of repercussion that allows the robot to recover, store and use energy with every jump — just like a real one! The bionic kangaroo is smaller than the real one, and is controlled through an armband that tracks the arm gestures of its bearer so the kangaroo knows where and when to hop. This robot, however, is not meant for you to have it at home, so don’t expect to see it in stores yet! Festo designed it with the hopes of finding ways to use energy more efficiently in the creation of new tools. Since having a pet kangaroo is not really a thing, I do hope they sell this robot to us one day!

Incredible Robots - Rise of the Machines

Incredible Robots — Rise of the Machines

Subscribe to Naked Science — goo.gl/wpc2Q1
Every other Wednesday we present a new video, so join us to see the truth laid bare…
Machines are evolving 10 million times faster than we are. Are you ready for robots that run our homes, watch our neighborhoods and even fight our wars? One day in the not too distant future, robots will travel to the far reaches of the universe, they will be the first to colonise new worlds. Robots will lead the way in the exploration of deep space.
Robots, machines of our nightmares, or servants of man? In the 1930s film Metropolis the robot was an evil character, it represented our darkest fears. By the 1950s they had become even more sinister and powerful, but over that last few decades our opinions of robots have dramatically changed, they’ve been reinvented as the police force of the future. But can real robots match the exploits of their celluloid cousins?
While the movies were creating ruthless men of steel, real robots were starting their own painful march into the world. Robots are still basic but over the past few decades they have advanced enormously. Before robots can become the masters of the universe, or even the servants of mankind, they need to accomplish one important thing, they need to move around.
This 1999 documentary includes interviews with prominent roboticists and artificial intelligence specialists. Beginning with robot locomotion and historical clips of ingenious experiments from MIT's Leg Laboratory, BigDog's ancestors dynamically walk, hop, trot, and perform impressive gymnastics. To find out the best way for a robot to move around the scientists look to nature. There have been many attempts to copy nature, some successful, others less than perfect.
Some of the robots discussed in this documentary:
Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Genghis II
Hermes the Hexapod
Micro-robot Cricket
Mine Clearer Ariel
Ambler the Massive Six-legged Planetary Rover
Adaptive Suspension Vehicle
Odetics Inc’s Odex 1
Spring Flamingo Robot

How to Make a Remote Controlled Spider Robot!!

How to Make a Remote Controlled Spider Robot!!!

In this video I show you how to make a remote controlled spider robot.
Clarification… The introduction of the video is stop motion animation, it was only done to visually enrich the content and to exemplify how the idea was born without using a real spider. I do not intend that you believe that the final result of the product is the same.
Also keep in mind that remote control does not always mean that it is Radio Control, since you can control something remotely even when using a physical connection.
Keep in mind:
The content shown in this video is experimental, everything was done during the recording, if you plan to recreate what is shown here, be careful when using the tools and keep in mind that you must have basic knowledge of electronics and basic tools.
Read the following recommendations if you plan to recreate it.
-Don't make the same size shown here, in spite of having included other 2 motors, a 9-volt battery was used at the end to move and the motors were burned after a while of operation, the problem is solved if it does smaller maybe half or less.
— Get a battery holder for 4 units, it's better and cheaper than doing it manually.
-The engines have to be all similar.

Solar Panels on a Tesla

Solar Panels on a Tesla

Electric cars and solar panels seem like a match made in heaven: free, clean power as long as the sun shines. A self reliant, solar car that’s not dependent on the power grid could recharge sustainably from anywhere you dare to venture.
So, have you ever wondered about bolting solar panels on your Tesla? And why don’t all electric cars come equipped with solar panels for a sleek charge-on-the-go solution? In fact, with improving solar technology and clever ground-up engineering, a few self-charging solar cars are just at the point of coming to market. In this video we’ll delve into the practicalities of solar power for vehicles and have a look at some of the early adopters of this emerging technology.
In 2017, Elon Musk suggested that Tesla would offer optional solar tiles on the roof of the model 3, but later retracted the statement. This was Elon Musk’s idea in 2017 – that car roofs are small and inefficiently angled platforms for viable solar installations, and charging from a home solar installation made more sense. You could even charge at night on stored solar and cheaper off peak electricity. However, Elon might have changed his mind, confirming that the Cybertruck will offer a solar roof option on the truck’s bed.
To understand if a solar car could really work, we need to find out how much solar energy the surface of a car can capture, and how much range that energy will provide under realistic driving conditions.
So let’s take a sedan the size of a Tesla Model S, almost 5 m long and 2 m wide, and put a totally impractical, hypothetical array of solar cells covering the whole plan-view rectangular area of 10 square meters.
When it comes down to it, solar vehicles are all about efficiency. It’s a matter of energy to weight. A practical solar car would really need to be designed from the ground up with reduced weight and low aerodynamic drag, to create a vehicle with more favorable energy density. For as far as electric cars have come in the last decade, the energy density of gasoline is still far greater than lithium ion batteries.
Teams gather each year in Australia to race pure solar cars across the continent from Darwin to Adelaide under the scorching desert sun for the World Solar Challenge. Consistent winners of this class have been the evolving Stella series from the University of Eindhoven, the team from which Lightyear sprang in 2016. Lightyear one reevaluated every component of the car and used lighter materials like aluminum and carbon fiber, to build a lighter vehicle with the best aerodynamic coefficient of any car on the market. Four independently driven in-wheel motors also lower the cars weight, and improve powertrain efficiency.
Sono Motors on the other hand, are starting with a more affordable $29,000 compact solar car designed for urban use. In designing the Scion prototype. Sono’s proudest new technology integrates solar cells into polymer body panels to replace conventional painted metal bodywork.
Toyota has experimented with a demonstration Prius with high efficiency thin-film triple junction cells made by Sharp, and Hanergy Solar, a Chinese manufacturer of thin film panels, have also demonstrated prototype cars with panels that can harvest 8-10 kWh per day and supplied such panels to Aston Martin for their GTE racing car.
Most solar panels rely on cells made from semiconducting silicon crystals, which convert sunlight to electricity at around 15%-19%, but new technologies are in the works to create higher efficiency solar cells utilizing new materials. As the future unfolds, and more cutting edge solar technologies come to market, we can see self charging solar electric vehicles become more and more practical, as cells get more and more efficient. A future cell technology with efficiencies above 50% would be a game changer, and probably make solar cars ubiquitous.
Heavy batteries are a limiting factor in the feasibility of solar cars. A breakthrough battery with more favorable energy to weight characteristics would revolutionize electric transportation, and make solar cars far more realistic.
Promising new technologies that utilize materials like graphene, solid polymers, and ceramics are currently in research and development, and are poised to create the next generation of powerful batteries with higher energy density, greater service life, faster charging, improved safety, and potentially even lower costs.
So should you mount a solar panel on your Tesla to make it a solar tesla? Watch the video to find out.

Beast Electric 4X4: Off Road Vehicle

Beast Electric 4X4: Off Road Vehicle

This beast is called the EZRaider HD4, it’s a personal all terrain 4X4 vehicle and don’t you dare call it a scooter. Its creators claim its the most capable off-road platform in the world, and the US Armed forces concur, because the $19,2000 EZ Raider just passed an operational evaluation with the special forces, and they’re ordering more units.
Mud or sand, rocky peaks or thick backcountry, the all electric, all wheel drive EZRaider provides a unique combination of power, agility, and usability. I recently got the opportunity to go on some clandestine missions myself around my neighborhood, and I can tell you, besides its function as a utility vehicle, it’s an absolute blast to ride.
www.ezraiderus.com/
Powered by a 60V — 3000 W/h lithium ion battery pack with an advanced BMS, and equipped with a 4 wheel drive system for extreme off road adventures.
The EZRaider HD4 has four independent 1,200 Watt brushless Hub-motors, and it’s 4 matching dedicated Sine-wave Controllers can reach peak outputs up to 18,000W it’s more than an electric scooter or off-road scooter. Outfitted with top quality components like chromoly driveshafts and Japanese precision bearings, the powertrain provides instantaneous power and high energy efficiency.
Engineered for stability across diverse terrain, the EZRaider features a patented 6 axes, 360 degree, Floating Long Travel Suspension that can flatten all terrain. In combination with the 4 wheel drive system, and beefy 22 X 7-10 tires, the 10 inches of ground clearance allow an experienced rider to crawl over remarkably challenging surfaces.
Each wheel is equipped with dual piston caliber Hydraulic disc brakes, and you can really feel the strong slowing pull of the regenerative breaking as you let off the accelerator, which takes a bit of getting used to.
Both the US Armed Forces, and the Israeli defense forces are currently performing an operational military evaluation of the EZRaider HD4, and after a series of successful tests, they’re in the process of ordering more for different fighting units as a new military vehicle. In combination with the tactical military Tesla cyber truck we envisioned in a previous video, this could be an unstoppable electric combination.
When it comes to useful working applications for the HD4, the possibilities are endless. Along the same vein as its military and defense uses, the EZRaider also makes a fine patrol vehicle for police, border patrol, or even campus security. In fact the Israeli police are already using the EZ RAIDER in its border units. One thing’s for certain, as a patrol vehicle, it’s not only more capable than a segway.
For more agrarian purposes, the EZRaider makes an excellent ranch vehicle for chasing down cows, hunting, or just simple transportation over rough terrain.
As electric power is transforming the automotive world, with EV adoption rates growing at about 60% each year, technological advancements in motor efficiency and improvements in battery storage technology are giving rise to a new generation of quiet, sustainable electric vehicles.
With its unique new form factor, and powerfully efficient electric powertrain the EZRaider is an exciting new entrant in the off road category, and we look forward to seeing what other new vehicles will emerge in our electric future.
PS who needs the Tesla Cyberquad electric ATV when you have this?
