What is HDR video?
In video terms, dynamic range relates to contrast. It’s the difference between the lightest and darkest parts of an image. Dynamic range is measured in stops. A stop is a change that doubles the amount of light. The dynamic range of the human eye is around 20 stops.
That converts to a contrast ratio of 1,000,000 to 1.
HDR video overcomes the shortcomings of the older video formats, providing images with a wider range of color and brightness. It has a dynamic range of at least 13 stops, much higher than SDR video. This means that HDR video can produce whiter whites, blacker blacks and can distinguish more shades of gray in between. In practice, this means that HDR preserves more details in the darkness of shadows and in the brightest areas of the image.
Because of the additional information that it contains, HDR video requires at least a 10-bit color depth compared to 8-bit for SDR video.
Wide color gamut
Although technically, HDR only refers to the luminance (brightness) of a video image, the main HDR video formats also incorporate a wide color gamut. A color gamut (or color space) represents all the colors that a TV or projector can display. So, the bigger the color gamut, the more colors the device can display.
The industry-standard color gamut for high definition broadcast TV, video streaming and Blu-ray is called Rec. 709. However, Rec. 709 only covers around 36 percent of the range of the CIE 1931 color chart, which represents all the colors that the human eye can see (the visible spectrum). HDR video conforms to the Rec. 2020 wide color gamut which is much larger, covering nearly 76% of the CIE 1931 color chart.
HDR video standards
As is often the case with new developments in technology, there are currently a number of different standards for HDR video. The two main formats are Dolby Vision and HDR10.
Dolby Vision
Dolby Vision is a proprietary HDR video format developed by Dolby. This standard uses dynamic metadata to adjust levels of brightness from scene to scene, and even frame to frame. This means that Dolby Vision preserves even more detail in the shadows of darker scenes or the highlights of lighter scenes.In addition, Dolby Vision uses metadata to fine tune the video based upon the equipment used to display it. Light levels and color levels are adjusted based on values determined by Dolby and the manufacturer of a TV or projector. This means the image is optimized based on the specific capabilities of the device on which it is shown.Unlike Dolby Vision, HDR10 uses static metadata. This means that light and color levels are absolute values for a video and do not vary from scene to scene. In addition, Dolby Vision uses metadata to fine tune the video based upon the equipment used to display it. Light levels and color levels are adjusted based on values determined by Dolby and the manufacturer of a TV or projector. This means the image is optimized based on the specific capabilities of the device on which it is shown.
HDR10
The HDR10 format defines a range of specifications for content and displays to comply with. However, it does not adjust the video playback for the individual capabilities of a particular screen.
One advantage of HDR10 over Dolby Vision is that it is an open standard. This means that any company can use it without the need to pay a license fee.
Two other formats of which to be aware are HDR10+ and Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG).
HDR10+
A variant of HDR10, Samsung developed HDR10+ to include dynamic metadata. HDR10+ adjusts the levels of light displayed for each scene or frame of a video but, like HDR10, does not take account of the specific characteristics of the screen.

Tasmania has been bubbling away for some time now and there’s no denying that the last 10 years have seen somewhat of a creative resurgence. Some call it the Mona effect, others might argue it was the whiskey revolution, either way Tasmania is the new home for designers, makers and independent businesses. Whilst about to hit boiling point, Tasmania shows no signs of slowing down with foodies, design junkies and experience seekers all heading to the island once known purely for its landscape.
I feel an enormous sense of pride to be showcasing my home state of Tasmania. I didn’t always speak with such pride, infact I’m ashamed to admit that I often brushed over the fact that I was Tasmanian — as I grew tired of having to smile while yet another individual enquired as to where the scar on my neck was (because us island folk have two heads you know… hmmm yes, champagne comedy).
Fast forward 20 years and I’m now met with starry eyed praise and excitement upon mentioning my home town. Anyone that has experienced Tasmania recently will testify to how unique it is, with an overwhelming love for the places and personalities that you encounter. I must say, you’d be hard pressed to find a mean Tasmanian. The state has an overall sense of friendliness, like coming home. For me, I was coming home — but not to the same place I grew up in. Whilst I liked Tasmania in the 90s, this new Tasmania is a hell of a lot cooler.
Hunting for George is excited to launch the trailer for our 8-part video series ‘On The Road’. This travel series documents our time in Tasmania hunting down design, architecture, makers, accommodation, homes and unique experiences. Launching 2nd January 2020, eight episodes over six weeks will showcase experiences in Stanley, Flinders Island, Launceston, Lake St Clair, Hobart, Bruny Island, Eaglehawk Neck and Freycinet. Including additional Tasmanian ‘Let Us In’ Home Tours along the way.

How to Fold A Fitted Sheet, an INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEO by Hunting for George



Are you one of those people that simply scrunch up your fitted sheet into a rough ball and stuff it into the back of your cupboard? Sorry my friend, you’re doing it wrong… This is how to fold a fitted sheet. ⚡
Those pesky fitted sheets… You wash them, you dry them but you have no idea how to fold them. The struggle is real we know, that’s why we’re here to help. We took some time out to put together an 80s inspired ‘How to Fold a Fitted Sheet’ instructional video. Why the 80’s? Because the 80’s were awesome* and that’s the only reason you really need.
Our Hunting for George co-founder Jo Harris kindly accepted (had no choice) to be our Fitted Sheet Wrangler. She breaks down every step by step involved in folding the perfect fitted sheet – simply and easily. You can follow along by watching the video above. It’s 2 minutes of your life that you (and your cupboard space) will cherish. Otherwise follow our step by step guide below for more information.
Get ready folks. This is about to change your life…
Step One: Turn the fitted sheet inside out. Hold the fitted sheet lengthwise by placing your fingers in both corners (with the correct side of the fitted sheet facing towards your body).
Step Two: Once you have your fingers holding both corners, fold Corner 1 over Corner 2 by ‘pinching and folding’.
Step Three: Continue to pinch and hold Corner 1 and 2 together. Then slide your other hand down the seam and find Corner 3. Take hold of Corner 3 and tuck it in with Corner 1 and Corner 2.
Step Four: Continue to pinch and hold Corner 1, 2 and 3 together. Slide your hand down the remaining seam and find Corner 4. Take hold of Corner 4 and tuck it in, so all 4 corners are together.
Step Five: Whilst holding onto all 4 corners, with your spare hand straighten the two loose, hooped edges and stretch out.
Step Six: Find a flat surface to lay the fitted sheet on. Once the fitted sheet is sitting flat, fold into thirds (from the bottom first, then the top down)
Step Seven: Fold in thirds again (from the left and then right) and TA-DAH! You have just folded a fitted sheet into a perfect square!
