Robot shark: GhostSwimmer drone developed by U.S. Navy looks and swims like a shark
The U.S. Navy has developed a new unmanned underwater vehicle that looks and swims like a shark.
The U.S. Navy’s new robot shark, called GhostSwimmer, is 5 feet long and weighs about 100 pounds, making it about the size of an albacore tuna, according to Wired. The robot uses its tail for propulsion. Because it looks and moves like a real fish, the GhostSwimmer is hard to spot and thus ideally suited for surveillance missions
The robot can operate in depths ranging from 10 inches to 300 feet. It can be controlled via a 500-foot-long tether and transmit video and data in real time. It can also be launched without a tether and transmit data when it surfaces after underwater missions, Gizmag reported.
The robot will be used for “surveillance, mine countermeasures, port security, and other defense and homeland security initiatives,” the U.S. Navy said in a statement according to the Register. The GhostSwimmer is part of the Silent NEMO project, which draws inspiration from objects in the natural world to make robotic designs.

Henn-na Hotel CEO Hideo Sawada sells his offering as part of a utopian vision where robots take over manual labour so humans can turn their attention to more creative pursuits. Replacing staff with robots might reduce labour costs, but their appeal to visitors needs to last beyond novelty value.
Motherboard host Ben Ferguson checks into the robot hotel in the first episode of our new travel series Voyager, made possible by travel tool KAYAK (http://www.kayak.co.uk/). The robot workers he meets are courteous and communicative, but can they emulate the human warmth of their flesh-and-blood counterparts?
